We work with existing buildings. Occasionally we do add-ons or new construction, but mostly we bring older buildings up to date. In our age of increasing scarcity, this is an inherently green and cost-effective thing to do. Many homes in older neighborhoods are quite large by modern standards. Bringing mechanical and thermal systems up to date, along with restoring old materials, is much lower carbon footprint than new construction.
Wood in old homes comes from old growth forest trees. Saving this wood keeps it out of the landfill, and from cutting down more trees. Windows: old wood and glass windows have old growth wood, beautiful antique glass, and are a defining characteristic in older homes. Replacing them with new windows is usually neither cost-effective nor green, contrary to some advertisements.
at Old House Care we recycle metals, salvage old building materials and generally save everything we can. This does not generate profit, but we feel it’s the right thing to do.
